5 bluffing mistakes every beginner makes in poker

Been playing poker semi-professionally for 3 years. Here are the 5 bluffing mistakes I see beginners make over and over again:

1. Bluffing too often

Beginners think poker is all about bluffing. It's not โ€” at low stakes, most money is made by value betting strong hands. Bluff maybe 15-20% of the time, not 50%.

2. Bluffing the wrong opponents

Never bluff a calling station (someone who calls everything). Bluffs only work against players who can fold. If your opponent has shown they'll call with any pair, just wait for a real hand.

3. Inconsistent bet sizing

Beginners bet big when bluffing and small when they have a hand. Experienced players pick up on this instantly. Use consistent sizing โ€” same bet size whether you're bluffing or value betting.

4. Multi-street bluffs without a plan

If you're going to bluff, have a plan for all streets. Don't bluff the flop and then give up on the turn. Either commit to the bluff through the river, or don't start it at all.

5. Ignoring your table image

If you've shown 3 strong hands in a row, your table image is "tight." This is the PERFECT time to bluff โ€” opponents will give you credit. If you've been caught bluffing twice, don't bluff again for at least 30 minutes.

As a Teen Patti player transitioning to poker, #2 is the biggest lesson. In Teen Patti, blind play is essentially a bluff, and it works because the game mechanics encourage folding. In poker, you need to be much more selective about who you bluff.

What about online-specific bluffing? No body language to read. Does that make bluffing easier or harder?

Online removes physical tells but creates new ones: timing tells. A quick call often means a medium hand (auto-call). A long pause before a big raise is often strength trying to look weak. A very quick raise is often a bluff trying to look confident.

These aren't 100% reliable but they give you edges over time.
